In addition to greenhouse gases, we also monitor the emission of other pollutants into the air. Our air separation units hardly produce any direct emissions into the air. Other production processes generate airborne emissions of inorganic gases, such as carbon monoxide (CO), sulphur oxide (SOx), nitrogen oxide (NOx), ammonia (NH3) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOC emissions are mainly released when metals such as gas cylinders, storage tanks and plant components are coated and cleaned.
We work with our customers to develop applications that reduce emissions. Examples include using pure oxygen instead of air at foundries and for heat treatments, for waste handling and recycling, and for the production of steel and non-ferrous metals. The use of oxygen instead of air helps avoid nitrogen ballast in the combustion or heating process, improves energy efficiency, and reduces emissions of CO2 and nitrogen oxide.8x8x
